ENSLAVED HEAD FOR THE VERY CENTRE, NEW ALBUM MIÐ ARRIVES AT THE END OF OCTOBER

Norwegian progressive black metal masters ENSLAVED return with another chapter in their extraordinary musical journey. A band that has refused to stand still for more than three decades, constantly pushing the boundaries of its own sound, will release its seventeenth studio album, Mið, on October 30, 2026 through Nuclear Blast Records. The new record follows Heimdal from 2023.

Anyone expecting ENSLAVED to start playing it safe after thirty five years of existence may be surprised, because Mið suggests exactly the opposite. The band once again dives into a world where the raw force of Norwegian black metal meets progressive ideas, Nordic history, spirituality and the distinctive atmosphere that has always remained essential to their music.

The title Mið can be understood as the middle or the centre. The idea of a central point, an origin and an axis connecting different directions forms one of the key concepts behind the new record. ENSLAVED turn their attention towards the space between past and present, between what human beings are able to understand and what remains hidden beyond the limits of perception.

One of the first major glimpses of the upcoming album arrived with Solar Will. In connection with the song, Ivar Bjørnson reflects on humanity's ancient fascination with the Sun, something that can represent both the source of life and a destructive force. Musically, the track is built around powerful riffs, massive drums and melodic layers, proving that ENSLAVED have lost none of their ability to combine heaviness with a much broader musical landscape.

Another piece of the new record is Spirit Helper, featuring Kevin Kicking Woman. Once again, the band demonstrates that its interest in spirituality and traditional cultures is far more than simple decoration. Guest musicians also play an important role on Mið. Sámi musician Johan Sara Jr. appears on the track I Am Ice.

The most recent preview is Tales of Trees. ENSLAVED released the track only a few weeks before the arrival of the full album. The song reveals another side of Mið, working with shifting moods, atmosphere and contrasts that have become characteristic of the Norwegian five piece. Alongside the heavier passages, there is once again room for a more progressive and almost meditative side of the band.

The album contains eight tracks in total. Alongside the already released Solar Will, Spirit Helper and Tales of Trees, the record includes Non Being, I Am Ice, Mountain, Parting and the closing track I Miðju. The limited CD digipak also includes the bonus track Fourth of July.

The running times themselves suggest that ENSLAVED remain committed to complete compositional freedom. While the opening Non Being serves as a brief introduction to the album, Parting runs for more than eight minutes and the closing I Miðju exceeds seven minutes. Once again, the band gives itself enough room to build atmosphere and gradually develop individual musical ideas.

The record features the current lineup of Ivar Bjørnson on guitar, Grutle Kjellson on bass and vocals, Arve "Ice Dale" Isdal on guitar, Håkon Vinje on keyboards and Iver Sandøy on drums. Production was handled by Ivar Bjørnson, Grutle Kjellson and Iver Sandøy. The material was recorded across several locations, including Duper, Solslottet, Peersonal Sound, Conclave & Earshot and Scandinavia House in New York. Mixing and mastering took place at Fascination Street Studios in Sweden.

Mið arrives at a time when ENSLAVED have thirty five years of history behind them. The band was formed in 1991 by Ivar Bjørnson and Grutle Kjellson and has undergone an enormous musical evolution since the early nineties. They have never denied their roots in Norwegian black metal, but at the same time they have refused to remain trapped within a single period or style.

That is precisely where the strength of ENSLAVED still lies in 2026. New music does not have to copy the past in order to grow from it. Based on the material released so far, Mið connects the band's history with the present while once again opening the door to experimentation, atmosphere, heaviness and progressive ambition.

Seventeen albums and thirty five years on the scene could easily lead another band towards comfortably relying on its established name. ENSLAVED continue to search for new paths. Mið represents another stop on a journey that began deep within the Norwegian underground and gradually transformed the band into one of the most distinctive names in progressive black metal.
