CARNIFEX DESCEND EVEN DEEPER INTO DARKNESS. MORE THAN MISERY BRINGS ANOTHER MERCILESS DOSE OF DEATHCORE

American deathcore veterans CARNIFEX open another chapter in a history spanning more than two decades. The San Diego band have prepared a new studio album, More Than Misery, following Necromanteum from 2023. The title alone suggests that the group are once again heading into familiar territory, toward darkness, inner decay and extreme music without compromise.

CARNIFEX are among the bands that helped shape American deathcore during the genre's explosive rise. Since their debut Dead in My Arms in 2007, they have gradually expanded their sound with black metal influences, symphonic layers and an increasingly pronounced atmosphere. Their music has long since grown beyond breakdowns and brutal vocals alone. The band have developed a dark identity of their own that can be recognized within moments.

More Than Misery continues a period in which CARNIFEX work with a much broader sonic palette than they did at the beginning of their career. Crushing guitars, rapid drums, deep vocals and massive rhythmic shifts remain at the core, but melodic and atmospheric layers also play an important role. Rather than offering an escape from the brutality, these elements intensify it and give the individual songs a greater dramatic dimension.

At the front of the band remains Scott Lewis, whose extreme vocal delivery is one of the defining characteristics of CARNIFEX. His lyrics have long explored death, despair, psychological pressure and the darker sides of human existence. The new material does not abandon these themes, and the title More Than Misery itself feels like a continuation of the world the band have created throughout their career.

An essential part of the CARNIFEX sound remains the contrast between extreme aggression and cinematic darkness. Over recent years, the band have worked increasingly with symphonic elements and a black metal atmosphere without losing their deathcore foundation. This combination allows their songs to feel more monumental while retaining the physical impact that becomes especially powerful on stage.

The previous album Necromanteum presented CARNIFEX in a highly confident form and confirmed their ability to push deathcore toward darker and more expansive compositions. More Than Misery continues this development. Rather than returning to simplicity, the band keep working with atmosphere, layers and the contrast between speed, heaviness and melodic moments.

The band now have two decades of constant development, touring and searching for ways to keep extreme music alive after numerous studio records. With CARNIFEX, it has never been only about technical brutality. Their music is also built on mood and on the feeling that the listener is being pulled into a place where there is little light and few easy ways out.

That is precisely why the title More Than Misery feels like a natural continuation of their discography. For a band that has never been afraid to work with depressive and nihilistic imagery, this is not an unexpected turn, but another deepening of their own identity. Darkness is not simply a visual accessory here. It is one of the fundamental elements of both the music and the lyrical world.

CARNIFEX have built a firm position among the most prominent names in modern deathcore. Although the scene has gone through several generational changes, the band survived both the period when the genre's popularity declined and its later return as one of the most closely watched areas of contemporary extreme metal. Their answer was never to chase trends, but to gradually develop their own sound.

More Than Misery therefore arrives as another part of a long journey in which CARNIFEX move between deathcore, death metal, black metal atmosphere and symphonic darkness. If the new material continues the direction of their recent records, it will not represent a return to the past, but another step in building an increasingly massive and darker sonic world.

The new CARNIFEX album More Than Misery will be released on November 6, 2026 via Sumerian Records. The record was tracked in Tennessee with Zach Householder of WHITECHAPEL, who was part of the album's new production team and handled the recording, while Jeff Dunne was responsible for the mix.
