Back to the Roots: Harlej Showed in Chlumec How Powerful Smaller Clubs Can Be

04/10/2026

Although Chlumec nad Cidlinou may be a relatively small dot on the map, its rock community and the surrounding area have a strength that could easily rival big cities. There was never the slightest doubt that the hall would fill up for an event such as a concert by the established Czech band Harlej. And the sold out show reminded us all of one important thing once again: smaller towns have an irreplaceable place in the rock world, and packed Sokol halls and clubs simply have a charm of their own.

The Saturday evening of October 3, 2026 in Chlumec nad Cidlinou was opened by Loco Loco. For many local fans, they may have been newcomers, but the fact remains that this bunch has been active on the scene for quite some time. Feelings about their set were slightly mixed at first, but as is usually the case at a proper rock party, the ice gradually broke and by the end the audience had given the band a fairly warm reception. It must be acknowledged that some singles resonated through the hall more than others, which is nothing unusual. From our side at Rebel Sound, however, we will allow ourselves one small observation: when a band has original material at such a good level, it is actually quite unnecessary to reach for cover songs. What pleased us all the more was finding out that Loco Loco are preparing new things for their fans. We firmly hope they will not be tempted by the glitter of the mainstream and will instead return more to their own, rawer identity. After all, that is what makes every band unique.

Then the stage belonged to the main driving force of the evening. Harlej set out on their autumn tour, and rock fans greatly appreciated that such a major band had decided to return to smaller, more intimate venues. Being within arm's reach of the fans, just as it used to be in the wild nineties, is a move worth appreciating. The band also treated the locals to an autograph session, which only underlined the atmosphere of a family style rock evening.

Smaller and hopelessly sold out venues also bring their own difficulties. The biggest price paid for the fantastic atmosphere was the heavy air, quickly depleted of oxygen by the huge mass of excited rock fans packed into a small space. Unfortunately, this equation resulted in one person collapsing in the audience. It is in moments like these that the true character of the band and the organizers becomes clear. The frontman immediately had the music turned down and the entire situation was given maximum attention and care.

One essential thing needs to be emphasized here: we only have one health. And even when we go out to have fun, it is absolutely crucial to think about safety. From an organizational point of view, the evening was handled perfectly, because the emergency medical service had been present on site preventively from the very beginning. Their immediate response was exactly what the situation required, and it only adds enormous plus points to the fact that nobody there was indifferent to what was happening beneath the stage. We at the editorial team are sending the person involved lots of strength and firmly believe they will soon be all right and that we will meet again in the pit.

Once the situation had calmed down, Harlej showed why they belong among the absolute best. The band opted for a genuinely solid, long musical set. The playlist was packed with singles that have accompanied fans for many years, and thanks to that there was not even the slightest hint of restlessness in the hall or any sense that someone might already want to go home. The question remains when new material will gradually begin to make its way into such a well known repertoire.

Harlej are only at the very beginning of their autumn tour. They still have another ten stops ahead of them, and we firmly believe that all of them will have at least the same great and energetic atmosphere that Chlumec nad Cidlinou delivered. The only thing we perhaps wish for even more is that all the remaining concerts will take place without any health complications among the fans.

So take care of yourselves beneath the stages, have fun and remember: If you're not jumping, you're not Harlej!
